The Boxing Day Games
A feature of Moreton village since 1969, this annual contest between the White Hart and the Dog & Pickle attracts over a thousand spectators! Starting with an obstacle race run in the street which separates the two establishments, the two teams move onto Moreton Bridge where a tug-of-war pull takes place across the two sides of the Cripsey Brook.
This year supporters of the 'Save St Marys' project were out in force, shaking buckets and doing their best to separate post-Christmas revellers from their wallets. This year they persuaded punters to give up over £200 for this good cause.
Winter Bazaar
Planned and advertised at comparatively short notice, the bazaar was a huge success. Despite the cold and rain, the attendance was excellent.
The day was rich with nostalgia. It was a joy to hear long-term residents sharing "gold-dust" memories of bazaars held decades ago. It felt less like a fundraiser and more like a homecoming.
Armistice Talk
Sponsored by Community Spirit, Andy Stuart captivated a full house at Moreton Village Hall with his talk, 'When the Guns Didn't Stop'. A real eye-opener, Andy's presentation dipped into the history of what happened in revolutionary Russia after 1918 when, despite the signing of the Armistice and the official end of WW1, the fight for freedom and liberty continued on another front.
Attracting visitors from as far afield as Hertfordshire, this excellent event raised £338 for 'Save St Marys'.
Community Spirit Conker Match
The first of what is hoped will be an annual event in our community, the atmosphere was electric. The afternoon was filled with the rhythmic clack of conkers, booming laughter, and fantastic sportsmanship from all the competitors.
Sustained by some delicious home-cooked BBQ pulled pork, jacket potatoes, and chilli, the young challengers in particular were a credit to their families, displaying admirable fair play throughout the games.
The event, organised by the parish Community Spirit group, raised an impressive £120 for 'Save St Marys'.
St Mary the Virgin Open Day
Despite forecasts of high winds and heavy rain, St. Mary's held a successful open day, drawing many visitors over the two-hour event.
Highlights included:
A talk describing the church's colourful history, from its medieval origins up to the present day;
Courtesy of Mathews Plants of Roydon, a well-stocked plant stall;
A participatory exhibition of campanology, which attracted over 30 people, chiming and ringing bells;
Cream teas, featuring a large range of home-baked cakes.
Thanks to the community’s generosity, the event raised £824.
